An unruly teenager from Aigburth has been banned from parts of Old Swan after a successful ASBO application by Merseyside Police and the Liverpool Anti-Social Behaviour Unit.
Stephen Anthony Townsend, aged 16, of Woodlands Road, Aigburth, was given the ASBO by Liverpool Magistrates Court in response to complaints from residents and shopkeepers in the Derby Lane and Doric Park area of Old Swan that gangs of youths were causing trouble.
Police officers from Eaton Road police station, Liverpool ASBU and the Crown Prosecution Service worked closely with the local community to put together evidence of the youths' anti-social behaviour, which included; running over the tops of cars and being abusive to residents, shopkeepers and police officers.
Townsend was given a two-year ASBO which bans him from associating with three other named teenagers and from entering an area of Old Swan bounded by Guernsey Road, Green Lane, Prescot Road, Queens Drive and Derby Lane.
He is also banned from Derby Lane, except on Tuesday nights when he allowed to still attend Old Swan youth club, and from behaving in a way that causes harassment, alarm or distress to anyone within Merseyside or Cheshire.
Old Swan neighbourhood inspector, Dave Herron, said: "ASBOs are an important tool in breaking up gangs like this, whose behaviour has caused much misery and inconvenience to members of the public.
"Officers have worked extremely hard, in partnership with LASBU, to secure these orders which we hope will make a real difference to the community.
"The Force is determined to use all the powers at our disposal, including ASBOs, to deter anti-social behaviour and improve the quality of life for communities and we will not hesitate to use them again."
Iain Criddle, specialist anti-social behaviour prosecutor for the CPS, added: "The CPS was given clear evidence of persistent anti-social behaviour in the Derby Lane area.
"As a result, we were able to make this successful application for an ASBO.
"This must send out a strong warning to other people intent on behaving badly that we will do everything in our power to protect our communities."
