Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher kicked-off a cookery school to promote a
healthy eating message in the city.
The "Can Cook Studio" is the first of its kind in the north west and is
designed to encourage young families to eat healthy meals.
Anfield star Jamie performed the official opening of the Can Cook facility at
The Matchworks, in Speke.
Jamie said: "Eating healthily and keeping fit is the most important thing that
is needed in the human body and not many people have a nutritionist on hand,
like me, to help.
"Learning to cook is a great way to increase confidence with food and to
improve youngsters' relationships with it."
The studio has been launched by Liverpool Primary Care Trust which has provided
£60,000 and the Five Children and Families Trust Partnership, which is based in
Speke.
The studio has been funded with £60,000 from the NHS and kitted-out with
£35,000 worth of equipment from Belling cookers.
It is is open to individuals, organisations, schools, community groups and
anyone inspired about cooking.
Chairman of Liverpool PCT Gideon Ben-Tovim said: "This unique partnership had
showed how serious the PCT is taking the issue of heathy eating in the city.
"It's not about preaching to people to give up their favourite foofds but to
encourage them to take a more healthy approach to cooking."
Robbie Davison from Five Children and Families Trust added: "As part of the Can
Cook scheme, we have already been encouraging older people and young parents
in the local community to cook.
"The Studio is the lastest move to encourage people to cook for themselves and eat a more balanced diet."
