Hospital pushing a good idea with "Super trolleys"

Patients at University Hospital Aintree are getting a smoother ride thanks to a fleet of new ‘super trolleys.’

The motorised trolley driving devices also take the strain out of the job for staff, especially along hospital corridors with 1:12 gradient inclines.

In particular, they are used for ferrying patients to and from surgical theatres.

Eleven new Easy Rider Remote bed pushers costing around £115,000 have been developed by Dutch company RRB in conjunction with Aintree University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Four existing devices bought by the Trust in 2001 have also been given overhauls.
Project manager Ken Cookson, the Trust’s manual handling advisor, said: “Training is now underway and the first patients are benefiting from the investment.

“The new trolley pushers, which can be easily fitted to 95% of Aintree’s beds, are the culmination of a lot of hard work.

“The project is an excellent example of how a hospital has identified an issue, researched possible solutions, made funding available and resolved things for the benefit of patients and staff.

“There is no doubt that the end result is a smoother experience for patients, especially those heading to and from surgery. It also benefits the theatre staff accompanying the patient by addressing manual handling issues.

“The device allows one person to control trolley motion leaving the other person hands-free to give full attention to the patient. It also allows better control when ascending steep corridors but, equally as important, the electric motor prevents free wheeling during the descent.

“Other products on the market offered a partial solution for us, but we were determined to get a trolley system tailor-made for Aintree. The adaptors were specially developed by the Amsterdam manufacturers for Aintree’s different types of beds and trolleys.
“I’m sure that hospitals across the UK and internationally will benefit from the work carried out by Aintree as they look for their own customised solutions.”
