Bakery jobs axed

Up to 200 jobs are to be axed with the closure of Sayer's - Liverpool's last major bakery.

Around 140 staff will be made redundant when the bakery in Lorenzo Drive, Norris Green is shut down.

Owned by Lyndale Retail Bakeries, Sayer's is a household name on Merseyside where it runs 123 shops and supplies national chains and wholesalers.

Sayer's was badly hit with the closure of the Kwik Save supermarket chain at the end of February since it accounted for half of its output.

Last month Lyndale began a 90 day consultation period with staff to discuss the proposed job losses.

Managing director Michael Quinlan pledged the company would do all it could to reduce the impact on the workforce and shops are likely to be unaffected.

One hundred and forty full-time and 40 part-time jobs are involved, with some clerical and technical workers to be relocated to Bolton.

The consultation period officially ends on the 7th July.

Ironically the announcement comes in 2008 - Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture - an event officially sponsored by Sayer's, amongst other companies.
