A builder who slipped and impaled himself on an iron fence while painting his house is recovering in hospital and joking about getting a welder to fix the railings.
Arthur Harrison suffered chest and stomach injuries in the horrific accident in Tuebrook, Liverpool yesterday.
Firefighters had to cut through the black and gold railings to free the 53-year-old builder who was then taken to hospital still attached to a large section of them.
Ambulance crews were called but despite their best efforts they were unable to release him from the railings on Isabel Grove.
The Royal Liverpool hospital was put on stand-by to treat him and he underwent surgery overnight to remove the railings.
His wife was today at the hospital with him. His stepdaughter, who did not want to be named, said today his condition had improved.
She said: "He is awake and cracking jokes. He said he knows a welder who can fix the railings.
"He was painting and working on his house for the past couple of weeks and there have been ladders up and down outside all the time."
Old Swan fire station manager Steve Bousfield said it took around 20 minutes to free Mr Harrison.
He said: "The man appears to have been impaled on his left hand side, just above his spleen and close to his ribs. He is very lucky to be alive."
