Liverpool incoming Lord Mayor wants to shatter all previous charity fund raising records during his town hall reign in the city's Capital of Culture year.

New Lord Mayor Steve Rotheram says he aims to raise at least £208,000 for the Lord Mayor’s charity in 2008.

Councillor Rotheram said: “It would be tremendous to reach this total and secure a huge sum for the Lord Mayor’s charities.

“Capital of Culture year provides us with an unbelievable opportunity to do good things. Not just for the Lord Mayor’s charity but for the city as a whole. I will work tirelessly to ensure Liverpool meets this fantastic challenge and exploits this opportunity which will shape the future of this great city for decades to come.

“I am totally dedicated to the city of Liverpool and 2008 is probably the best year in which to be Lord Mayor as it is such a momentous event –a fantastic challenge and great opportunity to help shape the future of our city. “

Councillor Rotheram who, at age 46, is one of Liverpool’s youngest ever Lord mayors, aims to hold regular drop in sessions for members of the public and wants to lighten up the Town Hall’s formal image.

He said: “I realise in this role I have to act as an ambassador for the city. You have to balance the traditional with the modern, but I want to make sure that people look on the Town Hall as theirs and be open and welcoming.

“I want to use my Mayoral year to capitalise on Capital of Culture and create a lasting legacy that everyone feels a part of. It will be the platform for the city continue its wonderful renaissance and attract further investment and jobs.”

To help him fulfil the civic role, Councillor Rotheram has enlisted the support of some remarkable aides – wife Sandra, son Steven, 16, and his two daughters Haylie, 12, and Samantha, 10. Councillor Rotheram said: “My year in office is going to be a family affair – we are all one big team. We are a very close, active family and they are my greatest asset.”

Kirkby-born, Councillor Rotheram was first elected to the city council in 2002 to represent the Fazakerley Ward.

He was educated at Ruffwood School in Kirkby and has since started up his own construction consultancy, although he is taking time out from his work to undertake his Mayoral duties.

Councillor Rotheram is passionate about making sure that local people from all sections of our community are fully equipped with the right skills to take advantage of Liverpool’s growing economy and in securing local jobs for local people.

Outside of work he is an avid footballer and played for Melling Vics FC for more than 25 years. He is a fanatical Liverpool FC fan and has amassed a vast collection of LFC memorabilia.
