Early-morning shoppers watched in horror as a man plunged to his death from an elevated walkway at a new retail and leisure centre in Liverpool.
Witnesses saw the man topple 30ft from a balcony at the Liverpool One complex which was opened by The Queen last year.
Ambulance crews answered 999 calls soon after 9.30am and found the man with multiple injuries in South John Street.
The man, aged in his early 40s, was taken to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital where doctors battled to save his life, but he died an hour later.
Police sealed-off the immediate area around the scene of the fall and a branch of Peacocks stores was expected to remain closed for the day.
Shopper James Doyle said: "The man was lying underneath one of the balconies and people said he had jumped off. It's very sad."
A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We are studying closed circuit TV footage of the incident and we would like to speak to anyone who saw what happened."
