A football fan who collapsed after taking five ecstasy-type tablets has been named as Anthony Lennon.

An inquest has been opened into the circumstances surrounding Mr Lennon's death in Liverpool in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The 28 year-old from Glasgow fell ill at a B&B in the city he was staying at with friends after watching Liverpool FC's clash with Norwich City on Saturday.

Liverpool Coronor's Court heard Mr Lennon spent the evening drinking before returning to Newsham Park Guest House on Sheil Road in Tuebrook.

Assistant Deputy Coroner Simon Holder told the court: "Mr Lennon collapsed after taking five ecstasy tablets and a friend performed CPR.

"He was taken to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital where he died."

The results of a post mortem examination have been withheld pending a toxicology report expected on 21st February.

A date for the inquest has been fixed for the 21st March.

Friends of Mr Lennon - who uses the name Tony - have taken to Twitter to express their shock at his death.

Steven Cairns tweeted: "R.I.P Tony Lennon. Sad news thought are with his family and friends x."

Damien Morgan wrote: "R.I.P Tony Lennon! Be up there partyin with big Jesus Christ #legend."

AndyStewart said: "Rip Tony Lennon ... He was one of my best party pals and a legend of a boy I'm so devastated."

Mark Cunningham said: "RIP Tony Lennon love ye wee man GBNF."

Merseyside Police have not made any arrests in the investigation into Anthony Lennon's death which may not be linked to a bad batch of "Dr Death" tablets.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Our investigation into the matter at this stage is not linked to the Greater Manchester Police investigation.

"We are awaiting the results of the toxicology report."

There have been a five fatalities since December that police say could have been caused by pills which containt PMA, which gives the user similar effects to ecstasy.

The contaminated pills are suspected of containing drugs stronger than the notorious party drug, causing a fatal rise in body temperature.

Jordan Chambers, 19, from Wigan, fell ill on Saturday night and was rushed to Oldham Hospital but later died.

Just 24 hours later Gareth Ashton, 28, also from Wigan, began sweating prfusely at a house party and when he tried to cool down outside suffered a heart attack.

He suffered another as he was being rushed to Wigan Infirmary and died on Monday.

Greater Manchester Police have issued a warning over the heart-shaped multi-coloured tablets that come in green, blue and pink.

Officers arrested two men from Wigan, aged 33 and 34, on suspicion of being concerned in supplying a controlled drug.

In Derbyshire police have arrested 11 suspects over the deaths in December of student Charlotte Woodiwiss, 20 from Chapel-en-le-Firth, and Dale Yates 18, from Buxton.
