Liverpool has been voted Best UK City for the second consecutive year by readers of a leading travel magazine.

The Group Leisure magazine awards were establised in 1997 and the 2008 European Capital of Culture scooped the accolade in an award ceremony last night.

Having seen off competition from Birmingham, London and Norwich, the city was recognised at a special awards ceremony at Hilton Birmingham Metropole.

Janine Ross, campaign manager for VisitLiverpool was delighted: "Thank you to the readers of Group Leisure magazine and groupleisure.com for voting Liverpool as the Best UK City for two consecutive years.

"The Liverpool Coach Welcome Scheme has established itself in a relatively short time and its ongoing development is a very positive sign for the groups market.

"This is a major coup for the destination and a very proud moment for all partners involved in the Liverpool Coach Welcome programme."

Active travel organisers from sports & social clubs, retired associations, special interest societies and other groups voted for what they consider the best across 21 categories, including awards for Best UK Resort, Best Airline and Best International Destination.

Awards were presented by Group Leisure magazine editor Rob Yandell, alongside special guest, comedian and television personality Bobby Davro.

Other winners included Drayton Manor Theme Park, Irish Ferries, Royal Ascor and the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter.

Group Leisure magazine editor, Mr Yandell said: "With more choice than ever before when it comes to arranging group trips and holidays, what better endorsement is there than a personal recommendation from group travel organisers?

"It’s great that the industry can come together to celebrate the success of so many individuals and companies within the group travel trade."
