The creation of Liverpool's Port Sunlight River Park is a step closer to completion after announcing Gillespies LLP as Project Managers for the scheme.

The hope is to open the 28 hectare site to the public in 2014 after the former dock is transformed into a 21st century community park and major waterfront visitor attraction.

The initial planning and testing phase is due to be completed in September this year and a community cosultation is set to take place in Autumn.

Euan Hall, chief executive of the Land Trust, said: "The partners are thrilled to be able to appoint Gillespies as Project Managers for this scheme. It marks the start of a new dawn for the scheme, which we hope, will result in an impressive asset for both the local community but also the region as a credible destination in its own right.

"A lot of people have worked very hard to get the project to this point and we hope that it is just the start of a successful future for the former Dock."

A vision for the site includes community woodland, open space and the creation of a major new waterfront visitor attraction for Wirral.

The Land Trust will oversee the restoration process of turning the former landfill site into a regional park.

Jim Gibson of Gillespies said: "We are very aware that this scheme is being seen as the flagship project of the Mersey Coastal Park Strategy are we are committed to delivering a park that meets that vision.

"Both the funding means and timescales are ambitious and challenging but we are confident that, once complete, the region will be rightly proud of the future Port Sunlight River Park and all the benefits that it will deliver."
