The landlord of a Liverpool pub which was gutted by fire has been bailed after being detained by police on suspicion of arson.

The 41 year-old man from Kirkby spent a day being questioned about the incident at the Punch and Judy on Bolton Street in the city centre.

The blaze at the long standing pub began at 1am on Thursday morning causing an evacuation of the building and ones nearby but nobody was injured.

Fire crews doused the 18th century building which will have to be demolished.

Detectives are looking for another person who may be able to help them with their inquiries.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We are appealing for the whereabouts of a second man believed to have important information in connection with the fire.

"Officers are appealing for anyone who may have seen a silver coloured estate car and a dark coloured estate car in the area of Bolton Street at around 1.10am.

"Bolton Street remains closed following the incident."
