Children across North Liverpool and South Sefton are to learn vital lessons about health and wellbeing from a education programme funded by a local charity project.

Coram Life Education, which teaches children the value of personal health and wellbeing through creative learning, was given £10,000 by health cash plan (HCP) provider Medicash for its Wirral project.

Half of the money will be allocated to a pilot scheme to roll-out health and wellbeing learning programmes to schools across North Liverpool and South Sefton.

Lessons are delivered via mobile classrooms that visit schools within 28 Life Education Trusts across the UK - reaching between 800,000 and one million children in more than 3,500 schools each educational year.

The other half of the funds donated by Medicash will go towards the daily running costs of the Wirral centre of Coram Life Education, the UK’s leading drug and education programme for schools.

The Wirral mobile classroom visits more than 50 primary schools in the area every year, with around 13,000 pupils benefiting from the programme on the Wirral alone.

Speaking of the Medicash Charitable Trust’s donation, Medicash CEO Sue Weir said: “As a Liverpool-based company, Medicash is delighted to be supporting Wirral Coram Life Education, and its outstanding and invaluable education of youngsters on the importance of good health.

“Making children aware of these issues from an early age can help reduce the chances of them developing ill-health in adulthood, which could also alleviate the impact on the NHS in years to come.

“As a leading health cash plan provider, day-to-day wellbeing is at the forefront of the Medicash message, and we are very pleased to be contributing to a cause that is having such a positive impact on children across the UK.”

Using techniques such as puppetry, props, role play and film clips, specially trained educators visit schoolchildren in the mobile classroom to encourage thinking about issues from developing positive friendships and making healthy lifestyle choices, to self-esteem and drugs awareness.

Peter Davis OBE, chairman and volunteer administrator of the Wirral’s Life Education centres, said: “The generosity displayed by Medicash in donating such a large sum is fantastic.

“It is donations such as this that help us keep working to teach children and young people the benefits of making healthy choices, and how this can make a positive impact which can be carried through into adulthood.

“We hope this will be the start of a very positive relationship with Medicash.”

Established 141 years ago, Medicash is one of the largest and most established healthcare cash plan providers in the UK, offering a wide range of affordable health plans for companies, individuals and intermediaries.
