Elected Mayor For Liverpool??

Liverpool City Council have voted for a historic change in order to have a directly-elected Mayor for our City.

10 cities across the country are due to take part in mayoral referendums on May 3rd, at 62-3 will surely see our promised referendum scuppered and a straight up mayoral contest will take place, fingers crossed.

With the correct leadership, Liverpool can be improved in many ways.

There is a campaign on the go from Liam Fogarty - www.amayorforliverpool.org - Liam has hopes of becoming Mayor and so does celebrity hairdresser Herbet Howe.

Who'll win is up in the air at the moment.

Labour Council Leader Joe Anderson has claimed ministers promised an injection of cash and power if Liverpool had a Mayor. Alot of people have slammed this move as a "smash and grab" tactic to stop the voters in our city.

The mayoral system we as a city want and need has been killed off to the dismay of many.

May 3rd will be the day when voters will have a say on the matter at hand and the campaign - A Mayor For Liverpool has been on the case for a while now and they are making alot of noise, which is strongly needed.

Liam Fogarty - the main voice behind A Mayor For Liverpool has been busy attempting to get the change brought in as he cares about the city of Liverpool and he beleives with the right leadership, Liverpool can do alot better.

But while the Labour group argued the changes would unlock more than £130m of spending power offered up by the government in return for adopting a mayoral system, the Lib Dems argued making the change without giving the people of Liverpool a say through a referendum suggested Labour was “scared” of “the will of the people”.

Lib Dem deputy leader Cllr Richard Kemp claims the changes offered up by the Labour party were undemocratic.

Labour leader Cllr Joe Anderson bit back at the Lib Dems of “breath-taking arrogance” in claiming they were worried about democracy, adding: “This is also breath-taking ignorance. Cllr Kemp actually said he was very concerned about democracy but I’m sure, and I’m sure everyone else is sure, that his party is in a coalition government that was not democratically decided on, yet here we have him lecturing about democracy.”

Cllr Kemp beleives Labour are running scared, adding: “I don’t believe a major constitutional change should be decided by a caucus of the Labour Party or this council chamber, it should be decided by the people of Liverpool.”

After the vote, which saw 63 in favour, three opposed and 12 abstaining, government Cities Minister Greg Clark said: “This is an historic opportunity for Liverpool to build a prosperous future and achieve its full potential. Liverpool is showing the way forward.”

Remeber May 3rd, that's the day when change may come to our great city of Liverpool.
