A physiotherapist from Liverpool's Aintree University Hospital has been chosen from tens of thousands of applicants to provide medical support at this year’s Olympics
.
Dave Woodward, from West Derby, is more used to treating emergency trauma patients and people recovering from surgery, but he will head to London in July to join a medical team of more than 4,000 treating some of the world’s biggest names in sport.
He will also work at the Paralympics, which take place from 29th August – 9th September.
Dave, 28, who was a keen swimmer in his teens, will be based at the water park treating the world’s top divers, swimmers and water polo players.
He said: “I developed an interest in physiotherapy from my time as a swimmer, so to be working with leading athletes at the Olympics is a dream come true. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
After applying to be a Games Maker (volunteer) in April last year, Dave had a telephone interview and received confirmation of his role in January. He will attend an orientation event this month where he can familiarise himself with his new surroundings.
Dave added: “It will be very pressurised because these people have trained for the last four years to be in the best physical condition for their events. Keeping them healthy and ensuring a quick recovery from any injuries is vital to their success.”
David Evans, Musculoskeletal Therapy Manager at Aintree University Hospital, said: “The whole team is really proud of Dave.
"That he has been chosen for this role is testament to the quality of his work at Aintree and it will make watching the events on TV even more special to know that one of our colleagues is there too.”
As an unpaid volunteer, Dave will be taking five weeks of annual and/or unpaid leave.
