Former Liverpool Council leader Warren Bradley has been summonsed to appear in court to face a perjury charge.
The ex-Liberal Democrat leader will appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court in March to answer the charge following electoral fraud allegations.
It comes after a 10-month police investigation into how Mr Bradley's son, Daniel, became nominated to stand as a candidate for the Central ward in council elections last year.
Mr Bradley signed his 18-year-old son's nomination form as a witness.
But Daniel said he did not want to stand and called his own signature on the form "a fake".
Mr Bradley, 45, now has to face questions over who he witnessed signing the paper.
If convicted, he could face up to two years imprisonment, a fine, or both.
He will be charged under Section 5 of the Perjury Act which bans anyone from making false statutory declarations.
Mr Bradley stepped down as leader of the city's Liberal Democrat group when the allegations became public last April.
He was then suspended from the party and now faces being banned.
Mr Bradley recently announced he would stand as an independent candidate for re-election in May for Liverpool's Wavertree ward.
A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "Merseyside Police and the Crown Prosecution Service can confirm that Warren Bradley, 45, of Wavertree, has been summonsed to appear at Liverpool City Magistrates Court on March 9 to be charged with one count of perjury under Section 5 of the Perjury Act.
"The summons follows a police investigation into a complaint referred to the Force in April 2011.
"Following that investigation, a file of evidence was passed to the CPS, which took the decision to prosecute."
