A burglar "Bad-Spiderman" dropped into supermarket and was caught-on-camera stealing sackfulls of swag instead of fighting crime.

The superhero-turned-villain broke into the store by cutting his way through a metal and asphalt roof before abseiling down a rope into the store.

CCTV footage shows him filling several canvas bags with cigarettes and climbing up his "makeshift web" with the stolen goods - before sliding down again to steal more.

Thousands of pounds worth of cigarettes and alcohol were stolen during the break-in at the Supersaver store in Litherland, near Liverpool.

Crime scene investigators were today (THURS) analysing the footage and owners of the store say the damage caused will cost more than #20,000 to repair.

Partner Matt Mahalingham, 31, said the store has been targeted in the past and one employee needed hospital treatment after a savage attack.

He said: "We have had some problems with kids shouting abuse at us and our staff and a brick has been thrown through the window.

"One of the shop workers was punched in the face and bitten on the arm and had to be taken to hospital.

"The police are looking into this Bad-Spiderman character. When I looked at the CCTV footage I couldn't believe it.

"He must have used some powerful tools to get through the roof and the mask he was wearing looked like it was from a horror film."

Shopkeepers in the Sefton borough are on the look out for the masked criminal who has possibly struck at a newsagents in Bootle three times over the past year.

Craig Riley, 25, said the shop he works at, Warren's Off Licence on Harris Street, was "a right mess" after the burglar used the same tactics to raid his store.

"It was last year and we opened up the store on a Saturday and the roof was caved in and there were loads of ciggies taken from behind the counter.

"Then, a few months later, I don't know if it was him or not but the shutter was rammed up and the shop ransacked."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We are investigating an incident where a man broke into a supermarket in Litherland in the early hours of Tuesday."

"Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
