Drivers, pedestrians and rail passenger faced disruption when part of Liverpool city centre was closed after a gas pipe ruptured at the Central Station and Lewis's store building site.

Roads were re-opened and the exclusion zone reduced to the former Lewis's building after an alert lasting about five hours.

Central Station also re-opened along with an NHS walk-in centre in Great Charlotte Street

Commuters were advised to check the websites of local travel companies before their journey.

Emergency services, British Gas and local authority staff had dealt with the major leak at a building.

Emergency workers were called to a report of a suspected gas leak at about 11.30am at the former Lewis’s department store on the corner of Renshaw Street and Ranelagh Street.

In order to ensure the safety of the public, roads around the building has been cordoned off and buildings in the area evacuated while engineers work to resolve the situation.

Central Station was closed and trains were passing through the station while the rest of the Merseyrail network remained in operation.
