A police investigation was launched after the death of a baby boy at Liverpool's Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

Greater Manchester police have confirmed that a man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of murdering their son.

The alarm was raised on 7th January when suspicions arose surrounding the illness of the six-week-old child.

The tot had been transferred to a specialist unit at Alder Hey from the Royal Bolton Hospital after r paramedics were called to the family home in the Heaton area of Bolton on 5th January.

A Home Office post mortem was carried out and further tests are ongoing to establish the exact cause of death.

But detectives is Bolton have confirmed that they have arrested a 22-year-old woman and 24-year-old man on suspicion of murder and causing or allowing the death of a child.

Greater Manchester Police say are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.

Det Chief Insp Dave Warren, from the GMP Major Incident Team, said: "Tragically a very young baby has died and our thoughts are with his family and friends.

"We are in the very early stages of this investigation but I want to reassure all those close to the baby and the local community that we are doing everything we can to establish the full circumstances leading up to and surrounding his death."
