The mother of a baby boy whose body was found abandoned in a stream is being urged to contact police as she faces her first Christmas without the tragic tot.

Police have been working to discover the identity of the boy since his body was found by dog walkers in Kirkham, Lancashire on October 1st this year.

Detective Chief Inspector Andrea Barrow from the Lancashire Police's Major Investigation Team said the prospect of a tough Christmas could convince the mother to come forward.

She said: "It's a few days before Christmas and we don't know who this little boy is and we don't know who the mother is.

"I imagine she is feeling quite upset. This would have been the baby's first Christmas and she maybe thinking it is too late to come forward to the police.

"It's not too late. I would urge her to please come forward.

"As the festive season is upon us, I cannot help but think about the mother of this baby and how she must be feeling.

"Not only might she require medical attention but she must need some emotional support. I would always urge her to come forward and contact us and let us help her.

"I know she might be frightened or feel like it is too late now but I would reassure her that it isn’t. Until we find out what has happened then her baby boy cannot be laid to rest."

The toddler was found in a stream known locally as Spen Brook just off Carr Lane only a few hundred yards away from a Boy's Brigade Club.

So far police are no closer to finding out who the boy is but believe that a blue and white striped fleece found close to the body may hold a vital clue.

DCI Barrow said: "We now know that the fleece was sold in an Asda in late 2008 and we want to speak to anyone in the area who may have passed it on through family or a car boot sale."

A Union Flag towel and a green towel with a 'Renaissance' label, were also found nearby.

A post-mortem examination was carried out at the time but the boy's cause of death is still unknown.

Police insist they will not rest until they know who he is and have even set up a facebook page and a YouTube appeal video to help with the investigation.

Anyone with information should contact the police on 08451 25 35 45 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or on-line at Crimestoppers-uk.org.

No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.
