Sir Paul McCartney will be named the 'Ultimate Legend' at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), it has been announced.
The former Beatle will be honoured at tonight's show which takes place in his home city, Liverpool, and also features Take That, Beyonce, Katy Perry and Kanye West.
Sir Paul is not expected to perform at the EMAs but will attend the event to accept his award, MTV said.
Richard Godfrey, senior vice president of MTV and executive producer of the awards, said it is the first, and possibly last time an Ultimate Legend award will be handed out.
He said: "Sir Paul's dedication to sharing his experience and nurturing the next generation of talented artists is remarkable.
"It is fitting that on the 15th anniversary of the most prestigious live music event that MTV salutes him in his home town."
A television audience of more than 30 million is expected to watch the awards on MTV's regional channels across the world including, for the first time, in the Middle East with newly launched MTV Arabia.
Bill Roedy, Chairman and CEO of MTV Networks International, added: "Sir Paul McCartney is one of the true greats.
"Not only has he has been one of the most formative influences on the music scene on a global scale but he is one of the founding fathers that has earned Liverpool the recent accolade as Most Musical City in the UK.
"We are honoured that Sir Paul has agreed to accept this award which is a fitting tribute to a man who has touched millions of lives with his music."
