The last Conservative councillor to have held a seat on Liverpool City Council has defected to the Labour Party.
Steve Fitzsimmons previously stood as a Tory candidate in Woolton.
Fitzsimmons said his decision was one made over the previous 12 months of coalition government.
Speaking exclusively to ClickLiverpool.com, Fitzsimmons said that the cuts made in Liverpool have ran too deep and that he feels the Labour Party are now the best party to safeguard the city's services.
He said: "This is a decision that I've made over twelve months of government.
"The cuts imposed by a conservative led coalition are too heavy and they will be damaging for this city.
"I feel like the Labour party have changed enough under the great leadership of Joe Anderson for me to be able to work with them enthusiastically.
"I've met with Joe and we both agree on how to help Liverpool recover from the years of Liberal Democrat influence in Liverpool.
"It's time for people who have the best interests of the city at heart to work together and not let national party politics hold us back.
"Joe has been open-minded about who can work with to get Liverpool back on track.
"I have nothing but respect for my former colleagues in the Conservative party and the hard work that they have done.
"But I feel my decision is right and I'm looking forward to getting down to the hard work of local politics."
