Everton star Nuno Valente lotto hopes

Everton player Nuno Valente must be feeling the pinch of the credit crunch after he was spotted buying more than a hundred lottery tickets.

The Portuguese defender held up a long queue of customers in a Sainsbury's store in Liverpool after handding over a wad of Euro Millions tickets to a member of staff.

Disgruntled customers grumbled as it took staff more than 20 minutes to put the Everton ace's tickets through the machine ahead of this week's draw.

Valente walked to the supermarket from the Radisson Hotel in the city centre where his team enjoyed a team bonding session after suffering defeat against bitter rivals Liverpool.

The Portuguese international, who earns £25,000 a week with the Toffees, enlisted a friend to help him fill out his lucky numbers.

A Sainsbury's assistant said: "I'm a massive Everton fan and I recognised him straight away as he walked into the shop.

"He came in with an older guy and they went straight over to the lottery counter and began filling out tickets as fast as they could.

"When they handed over the tickets, I was shocked, there must have been more than a hundred.

"The shop was really busy and you could tell the customers were getting annoyed. It was very funny.

"It about 20 minutes to put them all through the machine and I kept thinking why does he need to do the lottery he is a millionaire.

"I guess he must be feeling the pinch like the rest of us."
