Police have charged the mother of a 12-year-old boy with the attempted murder of her son.

The boy suffered "superficial" injuries to his chest and shoulder, was rushed to hospital by paramedics at 5.25am yesterday.

Upon arrival at the scene, police arrested 33-year-old Tracey Wickham at an address on Brentwood Street, Wallasey.

Detectives initially questioned her on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm but she has now been charged with attempted murder.

Insp Steve Kavanagh of Merseyside Police confirmed that a 12-year-old boy was stabbed and his mother was in custody.

He said: “He has a 5cm gash to his shoulder and no other injuries.

“They are not thought to be life threatening.”

The mother-of-two appeared before Wirral magistrates but did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody on Thursday.

She is due to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on the week commencing 23 September.
