Police are hunting the killer of a Liverpool pensioner who was strangled to death in his own home.
Brian Finnigan, 65, was found dead in his Stoneycroft red-brick house last Wednesday.
A murder hunt was launched after a post mortem examination concluded the pensioner had died of "strangulation".
Forensic teams spent Saturday searching the victim's home in Green Lane, where he had lived for more than 20 years, for clues.
Last night his devastated brother, a retired Archdiocese of Liverpool priest, paid tribute labelling him a "guardian angel".
It is understood that brother Brian had been targeted by thugs on another occasion three years earlier but with the help of family members, managed to reprimand the burglar and bring him to justice.
One shocked neighbour, who asked not to be named, said the 65-year-old was a caring man who would do anything for anyone.
She said: "He was such a lovely man, who always had a smile on his face.
"It's shocking what's happened to him. Everyone is in shock."
