Two Liverpool muggers were forced to flee empty-handed as their victim fought back.
The pair met their match in the 52-year-old dog walker who despite being punched in the head, fought off both of the would-be muggers.
The local man was walking his dog along the canal bank close to the Horse and Jockey pub on Waddicar Lane, in Melling, when two young thugs blocked his path.
They told him they wanted his mobile phone and money, but the man refused. Then as he went to walk off, the pair attacked him but he fought back, forcing them to flee.
The attempted robbery took place at around 6.45pm on Sunday.
One of the muggers was white, slim and about 5ft 7ins tall.
The other was also white, of medium build and slightly taller at around 5ft 10ins.
Both spoke with Liverpool accents and wore dark clothing.
