A contractor who damaged a mains water pipe left up to 20,000 Liverpool region homes without water supplies.

The burst pipe on Alder Lane, Orford, was fixed by water bosses on Wednesday evening after they received more than 4,000 calls from disgruntled customers about loss of water and low pressure.

Water supplies had to be re-routed and around seven water tankers were deployed to the area.

The water company has apologised for the incident.

A spokesperson said: "Water supplies were fully restored to customers in East Warrington last night, after contractors working for a third party accidentally damaged a pipe in Orford.

"We would like to apologise to customers for the unexpected disruption to their supplies, which was not of our making.

"We thank customers for their patience during this major repair."
