Drunken mob attack police

Two police officers have been left shaken after suffering a serious assault by a drink-fuelled gang of ten men and women in Skelmersdale.

The incident took place outside a pub in Ennerdale when two officers, one male seargeant and female PC, approached a rowdy crowd of revellers in the early hours of Saturday

One man became agitated and as the officers attempted to make an arrest, the mob launched an attack lasting five minutes, kicking and punching the pair as they lay on the ground.

The officers received severe injuries to their faces and are recovering from their injuries.

Lancashire Police Inspector Peter Upton said: "Two uniformed police officers came across a group of about 10 people, both males and females, who were involved in a heated and loud exchange of words.

"The officers tried to arrest one of the males and during the struggle both officers were set on by the group and both officers received quite severe injuries to their faces from kicks and punches.

"The sustained attack went on for about five minutes and both officers are now off duty."
