The city council’s appointment panel has approved the arrangements for selecting the new chief executive to replace Colin Hilton, who retired in June.
It was agreed that the salary would be up to £197,500 and there would be no performance related pay. The previous salary was over £200,000 plus performance related pay. This means that around £35,000 will be saved with the salary at this new level.
Council leader, Councillor Joe Anderson said: “We are looking for a person who can deliver on the priorities we have developed for Liverpool and has a track record of delivery and performance. In the last decade or so the city has undergone a renaissance and we want somebody with the vision to maintain that momentum.
“Clearly these are going to be very difficult times for local government so it is important that we recruit an outstanding person with the skills and leadership qualities to take the city forward during a harsh financial climate.
“We believe we are offering a very attractive salary and I am confident that there will be a lot of interest from high calibre candidates who want to lead the city through challenging times.
“At a time when all public sector spending is under review, I think it is important that we reduce our management costs to protect frontline services.”
The panel also approved voluntary severance arrangements for 12 senior managers. It is expected that the savings to the city council will be over £1million.
The panel also agreed to the creation of the posts of Head of Finance and Resources and Head of Audit.
