The former arts college turned University where Beatles legend John Lennon studied is set to rename a building after its most famous student.

Yoko Ono has been involved the development of the site and has given her blessing for the arts building to bear her husband's name.

The Liverpool John Moores Art and Design Academy is down the road from where the Beatles icon studied at the former Liverpool College of Art.

Yoko Ono said: "John studied at the University, when it was the College of Art and it provided the springboard for so many influential aspects of his life.

"When the University approached me about naming the building after John I was so touched.

"I was there when the building was planned and have watched its progress. It is an enormously fitting tribute to John and our shared connections with LJMU."

The new signage for the building will be in place for the start of the new academic year in September and will feature the distinctive self-penned line drawing of John Lennon.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Nigel Weatherill, said: "I'm delighted and personally grateful to Yoko Ono for allowing us to name the building after John Lennon.

"It’s a tribute not just to John Lennon and all that he achieved but also to Yoko who is so committed to John’s hometown and inspiring the young people who live and study here to achieve their dreams.

"We are extremely thankful for all the support she has shown the University and our students over the years."

"If they had to name it after a Beatle, why not Stuart Sutcliffe? At least he was a half decent painter. I'm sure Yoko would agree :)" Mikey Gannon, Liverpool around 2 years, 1 month ago

"Had John not left he would have been thrown out of the Art College, so why has it been named after him? He also nicked the college amps." Bill, Anfield around 2 years, 1 month ago
