A gang forced their way into and shot a man in his Everton home.
The three men broke into the house on Dacy Road at around 11pm on Tuesday night and fired bullets before making off on foot.
Police have confirmed that the occupant, who made his way to a house in nearby Thirlmere Green, suffered a gun wound to his arm and was taken to hospital.
His condition is described as stable and no other person was reported injured.
House-to-house, witness and forensic enquiries are ongoing at both locations and a high visibility police presence will be stepped up in the area to provide reassurance to the community.
Chief Inspector Chris Gibson from Merseyside Police said: “We are keeping an open mind as to the motive at this early stage in the investigation.
“I am sure the vast majority of people in the community are appalled that someone could be attacked in their home in such a way, and we look to them to help us by providing information to make the streets safer.
“We are in the process of establishing the full circumstances and I would like to assure the local community that we will be increasing patrols in the area.
“It is absolutely vital that anyone with information comes forward immediately to help these enquiries, either through our gun crime hotline or anonymously to Crimestoppers.
“All information provided will be acted upon and we will be relentless in identifying those responsible and bringing them to justice.
“If you have any information, or saw anything suspicious in the Dacy Road area around 11pm, contact us.
“We believe the offenders made off on foot, on Rydal Street or Walton Breck Road, and if you saw anyone running down these streets just after 11pm, get in touch as the smallest detail could be key.”
Anyone who may have information about the incident is urged to contact the specialist Matrix team on 0800 230 0600, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
