Liverpool’s newest boutique hotel has opened its doors, and its chief executive says the city is the coolest destination in the UK.
base2stay Liverpool, a 106-room boutique hotel located in Seel Street, in the heart of the city’s vibrant RopeWalks district.
The hotel’s historic building, dating from the 1850s, has been redeveloped to incorporate many of its heritage features – including original timbers and brickwork – combined with modern fittings and cool contemporary lines.
The £14 million hotel hopes to attract visitors looking to sample the city’s world-class museums, galleries and night-life as Liverpool’s international reputation as a short-stay destination grows.
The hotel arrives in Liverpool following the success of its flagship venture in London’s Kensington and is the second base2stay hotel in the country. A third hotel is due to open soon in Soho, London.
Robert Nadler, CEO of base2stay, said: “We chose Liverpool for sound business reasons but were also instinctively drawn to the city and its atmosphere.
"We looked across the UK but it became clear very quickly that Liverpool is the coolest destination by a long way.
"It has undergone such a dramatic renaissance in recent years and offers a cultural and artistic mix which is unique.”
Rather than having a bar or dining facilities on site, each air-conditioned room is equipped with a mini-kitchen and the hotel encourages guests to explore their surroundings by offering exclusive discounts at restaurants, bars and cultural venues across the city.
Robert says their unique smart luxury concept means guests can get to stay in a hotel which offers a designer-led environment without paying 5-star prices. Special opening rates per room start at £49, including VAT.
He added: “We’re delighted to open the doors to our fabulous base2stay Liverpool. We feel we have created a chic and stylish boutique hotel that, when combined with the bohemian location and 19th Century building, makes it really special.
“Whether it’s families looking to sample the city’s wealth of culture, couples and groups who want to enjoy the great nightlife or business people looking for a central base, we look forward to welcoming them all.”
The interior design of the hotel has been created by the chief executive’s wife, French-born novelist Clarissa Nadler, who took as her inspiration the immediate RopeWalks vicinity.
She said: “This part of the city reminded me of the Meat Packing district of New York - edgy, very cool – and we wanted the interior design of the hotel to have a flavor of the very trendiest hotels in New York.”
The hotel’s furnishings and fit-out were managed by Clarissa’s son, Dorian, through his furnishing and decoration company dcplace.co.uk, whilst the original artwork which adorns the walls was created by other son Ron Diennet.
He created some 526 pieces for the hotel, including a huge abstract for the main lounge called Pool People.
Support for the redevelopment, which it is hoped will help to boost regeneration in the RopeWalks, came from Liverpool City Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Northwest Regional Development Agency, City Focus and English Heritage.
base2stay’s wide variety of rooms, all of which offer free Wi-Fi, free games, 6,000 tracks of music and free internet (for those without laptops!) on HDTVs, as well as movies at £1.95 only, vary from Super Singles to spectacular double height Gallery Studios.
