After a successful 'Noughties' Beatles Bed In celebration in Liverpool for the Alder Hey Imagine Appeal, the Fab4peace pilgrims made a journey to where it all began.

It was 40 years ago today... John Lennon and Yoko Ono completed their first week-long protest in Amsterdam after meeting an army of cameramen and reporters to ask the world to grow their hair and stay in bed for peace.

The Amsterdam Hilton have made the most of their unique place in history and room 702 where John and Yoko jumped under the sheets has been perfectly re-enacted with orignial memorabilia.

The imaginatively-titled From Holland With Peace exhibition boasts unseen photos of the infamous couple enjoying a rare meal break, tucking in to eggs and soldiers, cups of tea and being entertained by a travelling troupe of surreal performance artists.

But you should hurry to see the free exhibition, because at £2000 a night the Presidential suite is a little out of most fan's budgets.

With impromtu performances by Beatles tribute bands and various people hanging around the lobby reminiscing about the event, the spirit of the original is well captured.

On the way back from the Hilton you could call in at the excellent Van Gogh museum, but planning in advance is a good idea as you could easily find yourself queing for the best part of an hour just to get inside.

But for those of you not wanting to risk the cabin fever of a hotel room the StayAmsterdam.com apartments offer a spacious alternative and you could either choose to be in the heart of the red light district or safely tucked away from the madness on the quiet Herengracht.

A walk around the independent boutiques and coffee shops in the Nine Streets area will happily kill a few hours and brain cells.

Strolling along the majestic Kaizergracht and Prinsengracht looking at each unique gable adorning the regal canal houses will make you feel like you're lost in an open air museum.

There are plenty of attractions and places to hang out and do a spot of people watching in Amsterdam, but beware of a distinct lack of decent eateries.

"All we are saying is... give quiche a chance?"

Unless you pack your hiking boots, there appears to be only two types of restaurant on offer: cheap tourist traps offering 6 Euro plastic cheese pizzas or overdressed and undersexed expensive fayre.

Flights from John Lennon Airport using Easyjet are very competitive, perhaps to emphasise their no frills service as rival airline KLM seek to establish a foothold on the popular route.
