Knowsley Safari Park has celebrated its 40th anniversary season with the announcement that more baby rhinos are on the way.

Keepers have revealed they believe three female rhinos that gave birth last winter are once again pregnant having mated with the park's 19-year-old alpha male, Shaka.

Safari Park General Manager David Ross said: “This is great news because our three rhino calves -Troy, Rosie and Bugo - have been one of the outstanding highlights of our 40th anniversary year.

“It’s fantastic to think that while they’re still effectively toddlers, they could have brothers and sisters on the way.

“Of course, with a 16-month gestation period there’s still a long way to go yet, so we certainly won’t be counting our rhinos before they are hatched.”

Knowsley chiefs have also announced that following the half term holiday next week the park will only be open at weekends during the winter.

In previous years the park has stayed open every day during the winter period, however park officials have stated that maintaining road safety has contributed to the decision.

Ross added, “There were many days last winter when we were unable to open our gates for safety reasons.

“Even if we had been able to clear the safari drive, it wouldn't have been cost effective to do so for just a few visitors.”

Daily opening of the park will resume at the start of the school half term next February.
