This Saturday (July 30th) marks the start of a two day pirate experience featuring a real pirate ship at Albert Dock Pirate Weekend.
The Albert Dock will be alive with pirate-themed surprises, including ‘raids’ on Dock venues, led by ‘Frenchy’ Hawkins’ Privateers and Blackbeard’s Pirate Crew. When they meet, will they parlay or fight to the death? Be there to be part of the action – and will you dare to sit in Blackbeard’s Chair and pay his fearsome forfeit?
If your kids think a pirate’s life is for them, they can learn what life was actually like sailing a real pirate ship on board ZEBU. You’ll meet Liverpool Privateers Captain Fortunatus Wright and William Hutchinson and notorious buccaneers from the pages of history like Calico Jack Rackham and Ann Bonny, see musket and sword fighting displays and films of cannon battles.
All those brave enough to attend should make sure they are dressed properly as Captain Hook will be conducting a special inspection of would-be small pirates at 2pm on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st July in Anchor Courtyard with special prizes for the best dressed. Nauticalia and With Love From Liverpool offer lots of nautical and pirate themed accessories, and there’ll be free face painting in both to complete the pirate look. As a memento of the day, you can have your own pirate family portrait taken with the Pirate Brethren – so parents will please dress seriously piratey too!
To indulge your adventurous side, make sure to download Lieutenant Maynards’s Orders from www.albertdock.com to join the pirate treasure hunt, searching for notorious pirates around the Dock; if you solve all the clues and find Fortunatus’ Treasure Chest, you could be taking home your own prize booty.
Jeremy Roberts, Chairman of the Albert Dock Tenants Business Association said: “The Dock is well known as the perfect venue for a rambunctious piratical celebration.
"The programme we have developed working alongside the Mersey Heritage Trust has everything from trails and tours to battling demonstrations and fancy dress competitions.
"The Dock is the perfect place for a family day with so many fine eateries, cultural attractions and cafes that cater for any tastes or group size.
"Shops in the Dock will be stocking pirate gear leading up to and during Pirate Weekend, so if the ‘uurrrrge’ to take part gets you – go for it big-style and let’s all make it a must-be-there date every summer.”
Sue Hanley Place, Mersey Heritage said: “ZEBU and the Pirate Brethren have been thrilling the crowds at Maritime Festivals for years with our mix of entertainment and living history; it’s great to bring it back to ZEBU’s own home port at Albert Dock.
"Expect the unexpected while the Jolly Roger flies at our masthead.”
