The new Museum of Liverpool will be launched by a six-year-old who wrote an audacious letter to museum bosses.
Finn O’Hare, from Mossley Hill, sent a letter last year saying how excited he was to see the new museum taking shape.
The Carleton House pupil then put himself forward for the job of opening the museum himself.
Finn wrote: “Dear Mr and Mrs in charge of the museum. My name is Finn O’Hare and I am nearly six. I am very excited about when the new museum will open. Please can I come to the opening ceremony? It will be great. I am good at opening things – Please can I open the museum?”
Dr David Fleming, Director of National Museums Liverpool, was impressed by the youngster’s enthusiasm and has invited him to the new Museum this week to give him more details of his star role on 19 July.
Dr Fleming said: “The Museum of Liverpool is very much a museum of the people and thousands of Merseysiders have helped us create the galleries.
“When we received Finn’s letter back in Autumn we thought it would be a brilliant idea for him to help us open the Museum, acting on behalf of all the people of the city.
“We are very pleased that Finn has accepted our invitation to cut the ribbon on this major date in the history of the city.”
The largest newly-built national museum in Britain for more than a century, the new Museum of Liverpool will open to the public for the first time on Tuesday 19 July at 10am.
One of the world’s leading history museums and a stunning new addition to the city’s famous waterfront, the Museum of Liverpool is the first national museum anywhere in the world that is devoted to the history of a regional city.
Demonstrating Liverpool’s extraordinary contribution to the world, it will showcase popular culture and tackle the social, historical and contemporary issues of the city.
Housing more than 6,000 objects, many of which have never been on public display before, the museum offers visitors the chance to unearth an array of stories spanning the Ice Age to the present day.
People will be able to see the stage where John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met, witness the city’s growth into the world’s greatest port, see firsthand the last remaining carriage from the famous Liverpool Overhead Railway, and immerse themselves in the city’s rich sporting and creative history.
