Liverpool Albert Dock family fun for May half term

by Angela Johnson. Published Mon 30 May 2011 10:38

Venues at the Albert Dock have come together to organise an artistic extravaganza to add a splash of colour to May half term. With arts and crafts sessions and storytelling, there is something happening every day to keep the children entertained.

Tate Liverpool is bringing back its Fabulous Family Tales; a lively, interactive and fun theatre experience for young children on Monday May 30th with a whole host of new stories. Also, from Tuesday May 31st to Sunday June 5th children can try their hand at creating a miniature master pieces, building over the week into your their own galley exhibition, using collage and recycled materials, letting their imaginations run wild.

The arts and crafts continue at the Merseyside Maritime Museum on the 30th and 31st May with two afternoons of creative works inspired by the world’s most famous ship – The Titanic.

Seized! The Border and Customs Uncovered on the 1st June will also be showing off their creative flair with an arts and crafts session, helping children make their very own bling. Between 1-4pm, children will be shown how to make cruelty-free jewellery and bags as well as see some of their endangered species collection really close up. On the 5th June, Seized! will be calling on a volunteer patrol to search their ship and spot any signs of smuggling. The trail is designed to teach children how smugglers of old and those of the present day used their cunning criminal minds to smuggle loot into Liverpool’s famous ports.

And don’t forget, two Tall Ships based at the Albert Dock will be welcoming aboard members of the public to walk the gangplank and take a guided tour from the deck to the galleys.

Tours will be given by the ships’ crews with details of the history, endeavours and escapades of the Kathleen and May and Tall Ship Pelican. The tours are FREE and will take place over the bank holiday weekend between 10am and 4pm. The tours are a drive to recruit local young people to embark on the next journey to the Isle of Mann which is planned to set sail on Friday 10th May.

Jeremy Roberts, Chairman of Albert Dock Tenants Business Association said: “Albert Dock is full up to the brim with fun filled activities this May half term. There is so much to do to keep the children entertained, and with much of it being free, it won’t put a burden on the purse strings.

"With so many choices available for the family, from the tall ship tours to the museums, family attractions, fantastic shops and family friendly restaurants, there is something to entertain everyone. The only thing left to decide is where to start!”
