Last chance for Liverpool region schools to get up and go

Primary schools across the Liverpool region are being urged to be quick to get involved in The Big Go and Grow, with the deadline looming this weekend.

The environmental campaign, which is open to every primary school in Merseyside, offers pupils the chance to learn new skills with the challenge to grow and sell their own produce.

Primary school children are asked to nominate their school to ‘go green’ with the opportunity to receive gardening equipment and seeds for their school. However, they need to be quick as the deadline for applications is Sunday 20th March 2011.

The initiative has been launched as a partnership between St Johns and Clayton Square shopping centres, City Central Businesses, Arriva buses and 107.6 Juice FM.

Children will be asked to go online to say why their school should be chosen to go green. Of these, 40 schools across the county will be chosen to receive environmental bags, packets of seeds, compost and gardening equipment.

Ten of the schools will be chosen to be ‘hot housed’ and will receive gardening equipment from city centre stores as well as guidance and advice from a local expert on how to grow their vegetables, flowers and herbs.

Schools have until Wednesday 13th July to get growing before Williamson Square in the city centre is turned into a giant allotment for the day and green-fingered children will be able to sell their produce to raise funds for their schools.

Ian Ward, centre director for St Johns and Clayton Square, said: “We wanted to give children in the region a reason to get outdoors this spring and we hope that learning to grow and sell their own produce will give them the opportunity to do just that.

“All of our retailers have leant their support and we’re really grateful to Aldi, Poundland and Mothercare for agreeing to donate the seeds, compost and gardening equipment the children will need to grow their own vegetables, flowers and herbs.”

Ged Gibbons, Chief Executive of City Central BID, which has chosen the environment as its key theme for 2011, said: ‘’The BIG Go & Grow is a fantastic opportunity for our schools to learn invaluable lessons about the wonders of nature and provides a priceless showcase for how green fingered they can be.

“I’m delighted our City Central businesses like Rapid, St Johns and Clayton Square have got on board to give the kids a helping hand and I’m sure the garden market in July in Williamson Square will be one of the highlights of the city centre’s year.’’

Debra Mercer, marketing and communications manager for Arriva North West said “Travelling by bus is a great way to help the environment – and this scheme is a fantastic way to help children in Merseyside think about going green and growing green – whilst having lots of fun!”
