Following phenomenal ticket sales and rapturous reviews, BBC ONE’s A Question of Sport is to hit the road again for a second UK tour.
The UK’s longest running and most popular sports quiz will visit the Liverpool Empire on Saturday 29 October 2011. Tickets go on sale Friday 11 March.
After entertaining millions of viewers every week BBC ONE’s A Question of Sport hit a record-breaking 932nd episode earlier this year after over 40 years on air. The idea to take the live-show on the road was developed to meet fans insatiable demand to get up close and personal with the show. The live tour provides fans with a chance to witness this much loved TV show in an exhilarating live environment.
The specially staged live show, licensed by BBC Worldwide and produced by Live Nation and Merlin Music & Live, allows fans to see their favourite rounds in a thrilling and exciting live environment from the ‘Picture Board’ to ‘Mystery Guest’ to ‘What Happened Next.’
Although largely sticking to the small-screen format, the tour is more than just a live version of the show. Over 30 big name sports stars with regional connections will be added as panellists and there will be exciting and electrifying live and interactive rounds where team captains and panellists can really engage with the audience. On the last tour sporting legends including Ian Botham, Tim Henman, Peter Shilton, Robbie Savage, Dennis Taylor, Tom Daley, Amy Williams and Colin Jackson became rock stars for the night switching sports-grounds for arenas and performing to thousands of overjoyed fans.
Translating the TV show into a theatre setting has also allowed the team to add some exciting new twists and surprises to the show. Audience members become part of the action, directly posing questions to the teams and getting involved in some of the rounds.. There is also a referee to keep the lively teams in order.
Presenter Sue Barker has the toughest job of keeping order for each show, in particular resident team captains Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell. On each date Matt & Phil will both be joined by two stars from the world of sport. The two sporting panellists on Matt and Phil’s teams will change in each city and will have a strong regional connection. The sporting celebrities for each date will be announced shortly.
Sue, Matt and Phil are all extremely excited about getting back on the road;
Sue Barker said: “I don’t think any of us ever envisaged how much fun a live tour could be. Seeing the reaction of thousands of people to Matt and Phil’s antics every night was just amazing.
"We were also truly privileged to have some brilliantly entertaining sports stars join us across the tour. It was just such an enjoyable experience.
"Yes I have my hands full trying to control Matt & Phil, that never changes but in a live setting it is much more exciting.”
Matt Dawson added: “You cannot under estimate the adrenalin rush you getting looking out at thousands of people in an audience, hearing them laughing and cheering you on.
"It is so exhilarating. The live tour is the biggest buzz I’ve had in a long time. It’s almost like competing in a major sporting tournament, I have my side, Phil has his side and the audience cheers us on. We just cannot wait to do it all again.”
At over 40 years old, A Question of Sport is the longest running TV sports quiz show in the UK and possibly the world.
