Liverpool’s Santa Dash has won the World Santa Challenge.
The city’s own festive fun run has beaten Las Vegas to the title after fielding 7,312 Santas – against the Americans’ 5,190.
The numbers came in this week from the Las Vegas organisers, confirming Liverpool’s crown in a world wide challenge to muster the most Santas in one event.
The record, held by the city in previous years, was smashed by the Americans last year when they fielded nearly 9.000. This year, for unknown reasons, their numbers dropped dramatically – leaving Liverpool in the clear lead.
Santa Dash organizer Alan Rothwell of Runliverpool, said: “I am absolutely delighted, what a result for Liverpool. Thank you to everyone who turned out for us on a cold winter day either to take part, provide help or to cheer on the army of Santas as they jogged, walked or pushed prams around the city.
“The trophy will come back to Liverpool – but we’ve already been warned that Las Vegas will be pulling out all the stops to win it back next time!”
The World Santa Challenge brings together Santa Runs from around the world, providing support and encouragement and sharing experiences. A wooden Santa trophy was produced by one of the participating countries – Tasmania - which is now passed on to the run with the biggest number of registered Santas.
