We ladies put our skin through the mill every day, whether it's trowelling make-up on, soaking up the sun, pore-clogging pollution or exposure to dehydrating central heating. But do we ever think about the damage we might be doing? And what can we do to prevent it?
As a mid-twentysomething who has only relatively recently started to think about wrinkles and seriously looking after my skin, I jumped at the chance to try out the Elemis SkinLab at Nicola Harris Beauty in South Liverpool.
Set in a gorgeous converted Georgian townhouse in the leafy Liverpool suburb of Allerton, Nicola Harris Beauty is a beautifully decorated, relaxing salon ideal for a quick eyebrow wax, a day of luxurious pampering and everything in between.
The staff are warm and friendly, and when I was welcomed into the fabulous orangery, kitted out with plush comfy sofas and a stunning chandelier, with a flute of pink champagne, I knew I was onto a winner.
The Elemis SkinLab uses state of the art skin mapping technology which allows you to see a true picture of your skin, above and below the surface, enabling you to react to the needs of your skin.
I was excited, if a little apprehensive, about the results of my Complexion Analysis Report (I have been known to use the occasional sunbed and sleep in a full face of make-up after a night out) but the Elemis technician, Claire, was fantastic and talked me through the process.
The Elemis Facial Mapping Analysis takes six different photographs of your skin which analyses spots, UV spots, wrinkles, texture, pores and porphyrins, while a colour print out enables you to clearly see what the results mean.
As I am prone to break outs, I assumed my skin was combination bordering on oily, however the anaylsis showed I had much drier skin than I realised. This, particularly around my eyes, is in danger of leading to wrinkles in later life. Nicola recommended I use an hydrating eye cream daily, which I duly went home and applied liberally!
For a more detailed profile of my skin's needs, Claire took me through a series of questions relating to my health, diet, exercise habits, sleep pattern, lifestyle and concerns for the future to personalise a Skin and Life Prescription for me.
The questionnaire, combined with the Complexion Analysis Report, produced a detailed Skin and Lifestyle Programme recommending Elemis products to help combat skin stresses, from every day skincare and basic body care, age maintenance, lifestyle demands and holiday skincare.
The report is clearly not a shopping list (as much as I would love the disposable income to splash out) but some of the recommendations are well worth investing in. With combination skin, the Elemis Tri Enzyme Resurfacing Facial Wash (£27.00) and Balancing Lavender Toner (£19.00) are definitely on my Christmas list.
With a wide range of treatments, pamper experiences and gift packages, Nicola Harris Beauty is the perfect place to treat yourself, or a friend, for the festive season and beyond.
