Wirral's picturesque Port Sunlight is to host its first-ever Christmas Food Fayre on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th December.

In the delightful setting of its picture-postcard architecture and floral boulevards organisers are offering a very traditional festive event for all the family.

Carolling choirs, lighted lanterns, and brass bands will provide special seasonal surroundings, with all the yuletide trimmings.

Up to 100 of the finest local and regional producers have been selected in partnership with the Wirral Food & Drink Festival, to offer a Christmas cornucopia of cheeses, cakes, confectionery and pickles, preserves and puddings. And hand-made arts and crafts, with artefacts made by skilled artisans, will make gift shopping reminiscent of times gone by.

The tasteful atmosphere will be complemented by the finest fir trees, charming vintage carousels, and a green grotto, where Father Christmas and his elves, accompanied by real live reindeer, will enthral amazed little visitors in an enchanted wood.

Children will be able to meet and stroke the reindeer, and get a flying snowman’s eye view of the village from a festive Ferris wheel.

(Gardeners at Port Sunlight Village are even going to recycle reindeer by-products to enrich the mulch for their excellent rose beds!)

Environmentally-aware guests will be encouraged to use public transport with Bebington and Port Sunlight stations easily accessible from Liverpool and Chester.

By showing their bus or train ticket, travellers will be rewarded for leaving the car at home and receive a complimentary gift courtesy of the Port Sunlight Museum, and will also be safe to taste the local tipples on sale. Plus for a free jingle bell ride with a difference, oriental rickshaws will be around for a tour from City Rickshaws.

The whole event will be a fabulous finale to Wirral’s Year of Food, a celebration of the peninsula’s finest produce, restaurants and talented chefs.

And the icing on the cake will be a guest appearance by the Wirral’s latest culinary star, Claire Lara, recent winner of BBC Master Chef: The Professionals.

The teacher from Liverpool Community college will be one of the many invited chefs on the demonstration stage over the weekend.

The weekend begins with a Christmas Fayre launch preview the evening of Friday 3rd December from 4pm to 7pm.

(Visitors should note the Friday event is free since several stalls will open until Saturday and Sunday.)

Saturday 4th December 10am to 5pm, Sunday 5th December 10am to 4pm. Adults £2.50, Under 18s £1, Under 5s Free.

Father Christmas’ grotto: £5.
