If you are a fan of the fine restaurants on offer in the city centre then the Almond restauarant is just cause to leave your comfort eating zone and pay a pilgrimage to West Derby.
Upon entering you are struck by the smell of almonds. Staff are friendly and welcoming, if a little shy.
An unobtrusive R&B and soul soundtrack plays in the background and the understated theme is affirmed by their decision to leave out the tacky balls of yarn and clear glass tables employed at similar eateries.
The decor is neat, very West Derby chic and modern with muted browns. Black and white prints of road signs with L12 adorn the walls.
The owners of the petite restaurant have made an excellent use of space - with long and comfy leather seating bar running the length of one wall to ensure a full house can squeeze in comfortably.
Almond was busy mid-week with diners eager to enjoy the burger special, which has something to cater for everybody, even veggies.
The clientele ranged from a peaceful lad's night out to women enjoying cocktails in the sunshine at the bar, a family birthday party and happy couples.
The ingredients are all sourced locally, and the cauliflower cheese burger was to die for, even my carnivore partner was jealous.
In my past life as a meat eater I've tried many different burgers from around the world, particularly California - home to Carl's Junior $7 guacamole burger and the famous In and Out burger. But this is a tasty burger and as good any on offer in the US.
There is also a fine wine menu available for the aspiring palettes and the well-informed staff are always glad to make recommendations.
A final note in attention to detail would be for Almond to ditch ditch the paper napkins, in favour for cotton to take the restaurant to new heights of sophisticated bistro dining.
