Located at the junction of Allerton Road and Smithdown, The Tavern has long been a favourite among students and the young and trendy types that abound in Liverpool. Although I confess it’s been a while since my student days, I find The Tavern still offers a welcome place for my young family at weekend brunch.
Always popular (often serving over 400 people), you can’t book ahead for weekend brunch, but people watching in the busy bar area while you wait with a coffee or orange juice, is all part of the experience.
It’s only 15 minutes or so before we are led to a good sized wooden table in the main restaurant. Reflecting the Mexican and Deep South theme, the walls of the bar and restaurant are adorned with eclectic Americana – plenty for my one-year-old daughter to point at!
We were quickly offered a choice of complimentary tea or coffee, which kept on coming throughout our meal. I ordered The American (£5.95), and my request to swap the bacon for sausage, was accommodated without question. With sausage, two fried eggs, home fried potatoes, baked beans and toast, topped off with a side of pancake smothered in maple syrup, my breakfast was delicious and very filling! My husband opted for the Full English (£6.45) which was equally generous, with Lincolnshire sausage, bacon, fried egg, black pudding, grilled tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms, baked beans and toast.
While we ate, soaking up the great atmosphere and noting the wide variety of customers the restaurant attracted, my daughter sat happily tucking into her toast, smiling and waving at the friendly waiting staff, who paid her plenty of attention and even offered her some toys to play with. We finished our breakfast feeling relaxed and satisfied – perfect for a Sunday afternoon!
When we heard The Tavern was introducing a new breakfast menu two weeks later, we couldn’t resist returning to find out what was new. The new menu, launched in time for the autumn term, is a delightful combination of old favourites and tempting new additions. The American, Full English and The Mexican now feature alongside dishes that were previously only occasionally available as specials. Thoroughly taken in by the name, I opted for Breakfast at Tiffany’s (£5.95). It came with perfectly creamy scrambled eggs, plenty of tasty bacon and two fluffy American pancakes with a side of maple syrup. I’m not sure how many of these Audrey Hepburn would have eaten in her time, but tucking in, I could easily imagine myself in a bustling New York Deli. My husband went for Eggs Benny (£5.95), traditional Eggs Benedict with a choice of salmon or bacon. He opted for bacon which was crisp and complimented the soft poached eggs, lightly toasted English muffin and tasty light Hollandaise.
The Tavern offers one of the best breakfasts in Liverpool. Great food at great prices and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere keep me coming back time and time again.
