If you think sherry is only something to dish-out with the mince pies, think again.
This wine from Southern Spain is fast receiving the attention and credit that has long eluded it in the UK.
The vast range of Fino and Oloroso sherries on offer is a far cry from granny's favourite Christmas 'cream' tipple.
Sherry has long enjoyed a quite a different reputation among its aficionados in the ancient bodegas.
So complex is the range of sherries that it could appear daunting for the uninitiated... but the tasting laid-on at Lunya in Liverpool proved that sherry is highly accessible, even to the novice palate
Partnering with Gonzalez Byass, Lunya held a free sherry tasting in the deli in School Lane on a Saturday morning.
It was an opportunity to taste some of Gonzalez Byass wonderful styles, from ultra dry and crisp Finos to luxuriously sweet and raisiny Pedro Ximenez.
The event showcased Tio Pepe En Rama - a very fresh, unfiltered crisp Fino - its very first showing in the North of England. This sherry is un-aged, straight from the barrel and only lasts 3 months.
Gonzalez Byass' expert Paul Shepherd was on hand to guide the uninitiated through the range of blends available and to answer questions in a very relaxed and informal setting.
He explained the process for producing sherry of different variations in tastes through maturing in oak barrels of different ages.
An enthusiastic flow of people enjoyed the tasting, and Lunya generously provided mouth-watering nibbles like delicious Spanish olives, artisan bread and fine serrano ham.
All these are on sale amongst the array of foods on offer in the unique delicatessen and restaurant that is Lunya in Liverpool.
