After a Hard Day's browse in the city centre shops, my mother and I decided to escape the madding crowd and head to the Hard Days Night.
Hoping to eat lunch, we found we had missed the operational lunch hours at Blakes Restaurant (12pm-2.30pm daily Tuesday - Saturday) but were welcomed into the plush Lounge and Bar adjacent to the hotel reception.
A warm and inviting space filled with comfy leather seating and dark wood tables, the walls are adorned with photographs of the Fab Four, beside our table it is those familiar black and white grins on the steps of the William Brown library. Subtle decor dedicated to our city's most famous sons, while a soft score of Beatles tracks plays at a volume akin with relaxation, truly makes you feel a swell of pride for the city as you unwind.
There's a wide choice for dining in the Lounge. The Hard Days Night Afternoon Teas are served here, with High Tea and a simple Cream Tea on offer (prices range from £7.95-£23.95) There's also a menu to suit snacks at any time of day, comprising of breakfast muffins, lunchtime sandwiches or salads through to the evening Charchuterie and tapas selection.
Staff were extremely accommodating and offered us the menu from Blakes restaurant seeing that it had been our intention to dine there. My mum chose Spanish Omelette with a Rustic Mediterranean Salsa which was a generous portion for starters, and, I was assured, very satisfying. On a rare hot day, I went for the Waldorf salad – Pancetta, Blue Cheese Apple Crisp & Celery. Delicious, light and refreshing.
For mains we enjoyed Cajun Chicken with Crushed Potatoes and Lime Yoghurt and Fish and Chips, Mushy Peas and Tartare Sauce. It was impossible not to take up the offer of sampling the chicken - juicy and bursting with flavour. My fish was similarly succulent with the batter not too greasy, and plenty of mushy peas and tartare to mop (top) up with the fries.
Despite being tempted by the puddings, we rounded off our gastric treat by sharing a Cream Tea (£7.95), two freshly baked mini scones, strawberry jam and clotted cream - naughty but it certainly please pleased me to treat my mum, who commented on how restful the afternoon meal had been, with staff courteous but not over-bearing.
For anyone looking for a more lively experience, on Friday and Saturday evenings The Live Lounge springs into life where guests can hear some of the cities top acoustic performers sing playlists including current hits as well as covers of the Fab Four's top hits.
9/10 Happiness Is A Warm SCONE.
Blakes Restaurant is open Tuesday to Friday for Breakfast, Lunch (12pm-2.30pm) and Dinner (5.30pm - late) all day Saturday and opening for breakfast only on Sundays and Mondays.
