Review: Autumn at 60 Hope Street, Liverpool Georgian Quarter

Given the recent heat wave you could be forgiven for wondering why 60 Hope Street's Autumn menu has arrived amidst the sunshine. But, inevitably, the dark nights will draw in and 60 has prepared a menu to warm the cockles, or rather, the mussels, given their inclusion amongst a delicious array of starters.

Keen to show off Liverpool's Georgian Quarter to my friend, visiting from Brighton, we arrived at 60 having found a rare parking space alongside the magnificent Blackburne House. Flanked by our two great Cathedrals, and littered with impressive Grade II listed Georgian buildings, including number 60, Hope Street emanates a warmth that seems to rise directly from its historic cobbles.

Inside 60, greeted by courteous waiting staff, we were seated by the front window. Having previously visited during daylight hours, when a glorious amount of natural light pours in through these large windows, by contrast, the electric lighting feels too bright for an evening meal. Decor is sparse, with a simple colour scheme, dark blue and orange paint on the back wall breaks up the clean, white tones at the entrance. Elegance is the watchword at 60, and the bustling atmosphere more than compensates for a lack of vibrance in decoration.

60 is currently offering three courses and half a bottle of wine at £25.95 per person, or for the lesser appetite, 2 courses and a glass of wine are an absolute steal at £15 a head.

Appetites at the ready, we prepared for a three course feast. To start, we ordered Sweetcorn & Ham Soup and Confit Duck with Beetroot Salad & Fig Jam. My soup was delightful, having expected a broth of chopped ham and chunks of sweetcorn, I was presented with a delicious cream of sweetcorn soup with a thick slice of cooked ham as a centre piece. The duck was beautifully presented and, my friend commented, very tasty although slightly lacking in moisture.

Aiming to avoid a headache the next morning, we declined the offer of wine and opted for two glasses of non-alcoholic ginger ale. Understandably, on a busy Saturday evening, the staff at 60 were doing their utmost to battle the heaving demands of two large parties but we waited the twenty-five minute duration of our starters for our drinks.

At last, with apologies, they were served along with our seasonal main courses of Roast Breast of Goosnargh Chicken with Potato Gratin, Savoy cabbage and Pancetta, with a side of Homemade chips (£3.50), and Cumbrian Braised Beef with Horseradish Mash. Melt-in-the-mouth beef was perfectly complemented by the rich, indulgent mash while my companion's chicken was praised for its generous portion but the potato gratin was rather lacking in flavour. This was ignored as we guzzled the exceedingly satisfying side dish of homemade chips, which I can but assume are fried in goose fat to achieve such a tasty result.

For dessert, although tempted by the signature dish of a deep fried jam sandwich with Carnation milk ice cream, we went for the Specials - Strawberry Cheesecake and Chocolate Delice with Banana & Yoghurt Ripple - both equally splendid but left us filled to the brim! At £25 per head to dine in a restaurant of this calibre, you would be foolish not to take advantage of the offer and indulge at one of the very best Liverpool eateries.

7/10
