Food lovers at the Isla Gladstone Conservatory are on the hunt for Liverpool's best loved and lost recipes.
The venue, in the city's Stanley Park, is launching a competition to encourage members of the local community to submit recipes that have been passed down through generations from mother to daughter, father to son or between friends with the aim of preserving them for future generations to share and enjoy.
Owner of the Isla Gladstone, Gemma McGowan, said: "These recipes are often wedged in the back of kitchen drawers or tucked in old cookbooks but we want to hear about them!
"They are an important part of Liverpool’s heritage and it would be a crime to let them disappear."
The competition winner will be chosen by a panel of judges, including Liverpool historians Ken Pye and Frank Carlyle, Head Chef Neil Dempsey, owner Gemma McGowan and food features writer at the Liverpool ECHO, Jade Wright.
Ken Pye added: "Scousers love celebrating life, and what better way to do this than around the family table? One of the many strengths of Liverpudlians is their sense of community.
"This is underscored by the importance of family-life, and it is our shared meal times that bind and strengthen families.
"The recipes that have been handed down through the generations are treasured demonstrations of that bond.
"These special meals form a bridge between our heritage and our present and, as we in turn pass them on, they connect us with the future."
The top three recipes will be announced on Thursday 31st March, and will be entered into a live final where entrants will be invited to Kemps Bistro to cook for the judges.
The winner, announced on the night, will have their recipe added to the menu at Kemps Bistro and included in a limited edition booklet available to all visitors of the Conservatory.
Gemma added: "Part of the Isla Gladstone’s philosophy has always been about conservation of the area’s history, reflected in the £12million regeneration of the conservatory itself.
"This competition is about getting the community involved and helping residents leave a legacy for their loved ones. We’re really excited about it."
To enter, email recipes and background information to info@theislagladstone.co.uk with the subject line ‘Mum’s the word’, drop into Kemps Bistro or send to "Mum’s the word" at The Isla Gladstone Conservatory, Stanley Park, Anfield Road, Liverpool, L4 0TD.
