As Red Dwarf returned to our TV screens this weekend, excited fans gathered in the Aigburth Arms to "Welcome Home Dave" in aid of the James Bulger Red Balloon Learner Centre Appeal.

James Bulger's mother Denise Fergus kicked off proceedings by unveiling a commemorative plaque to The Aigburth Arms - the cult sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf's birthplace - creators Rob Grant and Doug Naylor drank in the pub as students and came up with the idea of setting a sit-com in space.

More than 80 Red Dwarf fans packed into the pub to watch the brand new episode, making a record for the largest gathering ever to watch a TV sit-com as it broadcast.

Event specialists Purple Revolver also entertained the crowd with a "Planet potting" pool battle, Dave Lister curry club, a Red Dwarf quiz, fancy dress competition, and a charity raffle in aid of the James Bulger Red Balloon Appeal.

Purple Revolver's party co-ordinator Angela Johnson said: "It was a great honour to have Denise unveil the plaque for us.

"The event was to celebrate Red Dwarf, and Dave Lister's Return to Earth, but at the heart of the fun was the charity.

"We're delighted Denise was able to join us, although she seemed a little overwhelmed by those of us in slightly bizarre fancy dress!

"We believe we have set a record for the largest crowd to watch a TV sitcom as we had over eighty fans huddled together watching the show as it was broadcast on Dave.

"The evening went by without a "smeg up" and we are pleased to have raised cash for such a good cause."

Denise Fergus, 42, said: "I was thrilled to be asked to take part.

"I had no idea this pub held such significance for fans of Red Dwarf.

"The plaque looks great next to what I'm told is Lister's pool table.

"I can't say I'm a huge fan of the programme but it is wonderful to see so many people excited, and raising money for Red Balloon because of it."

Our pictures show the Ouroboros Lister trophy was awarded to Chris Burns for his gun slinging Gunmen of the Apocalypse themed cowboy outfit, pipping Diana Everett to the post with her Quarantine Rimmer tribute including special guest Mr Flibble!

But the runaway smeggiest smeggers on the day were John Brittles and his son John. With John senior crowned Prince of the Planet Potters, followed by the pair claiming victory as quiz champions.
