Liverpool’s Laughterhouse Comedy is channelling the Olympic spirit this month, with a champion line up of comedy worthy of a medal, as they present more shenanigans from the country’s top comic performers.
Regular Laughterhouse MCs Neil Fitzmaurice (The Office, Phoenix Nights and Peep Show), Ste Porter and Liverpool’s Chris Cairns will present the nights with their own unique styles, introducing some of the top comedians on the circuit today including Justin Moorhouse, Ian Cognito, Rob Heeney, Brendan Dempsey and many more.
Ian Cognito is one of the best comics on the national circuit, a veteran who clearly knows what he’s doing as he spits his darkly humorous vitriol over an unsuspecting crowd. Outspoken, opinionated, and totally clued up, this man’s take on the world will have you convinced and convulsed (with laughter).
"Cognito puts them all in the shade. If you want to know what’s wrong with New Britain, Ian Cognito’s going to tell you. And if you don’t, you’d better keep your mouth shut. Just stunning." Phil Daoust, The Guardian
One of a handful of acts invited to perform at the prestigious Just For Laughs in Montreal, Irish funnyman Brendan Dempsey’s festivalled Edinburgh, Melbourne, Adelaide, Kansas, Finland and The Cat Laughs in Kilkenny. He’s played throughout Europe, across America, in Botswana & South Africa, and was the first comedian to perform in Qingdao China. Youngsters will recognize him from the BAFTA award-winning comedy-drama The Revenge Files of Alistair Fury, whereas grown ups will know him from OAP cult hit comedy Waking Ned, About Adam, briefly in Gangs of New York, or possibly one Christmas over the years in the Father Ted Christmas Special. Often spotted performing his stand up on BBC, ITV, Channel 4, or RTE (Just for Laughs), or during the last two series of The Comedy Store on Comedy Central (formerly Paramount), Brendan’s also starred with Christan Slater in both record breaking West End Runs of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and is currently developing a comedy drama and a sitcom for television.
Justin Moorhouse is not only a popular DJ on Manchester’s Key 103 but also has a wealth of television appearances under his belt. Perhaps most recognisable as Young Kenny in the hugely successful, award-winning Phoenix Nights he also appeared in spin off series Max & Paddy's Road To Nowhere. Other TV appearances include Shameless for E4, The Live Floor Show for BBC 2, Does Doug Know on Channel 4, Stan The Man for Granada, prison drama Buried for Ch 4 and The World Stands Up for Paramount. He also presented Talk of the Town, a late night late entertainment show transmitted on Friday nights in the Granada region.
Justin has certainly come a long way since winning the City Life Comedian of The Year Award in October 2000 (past winners of the prestigious award have included Peter Kay, Caroline Aherne, Dave Gorman and Chris Addison, whilst John Thomson and Johnny Vegas were placed runners-up) and being placed second in the prestigious BBC New Talent Awards in Edinburgh 2001.
Originating from Douglas, Isle of Man, you'd think qualified Chemical Physicist, trained Systems Analyst, former Taxi Driver and International Table Tennis player Rob Heeney would be able to draw on these amazing experiences. He cannot. Rob has played all the UK’s top comedy clubs and following a commission writing for Radio Two's The Day The Music Died he enjoyed a stint presenting the breakfast show on Reading's 2Ten FM, before joining Heart, where he spent two years writing Jamie Theakston's Breakfast Show - winning a Sony Silver Award. He has also guested on BBC Five Live's Fighting Talk and as a regular guest on Sky News's Press Preview. Rob is currently comedy writing for Capital FM and EA Games.
Rob, Ian, Brendan and Justin are just four comedians from an illustrious August line up at Laughterhouse, also including Steve Harris, Phil Butler, Pierre Hollins, Andy Askins, Sean Percival, Steve Shanyaski, Howard Read and Caimh McDonnell (see editors notes below for full event listings and www.laughterhouse.com for biographies of all comedians listed).
With a choice of Standard and Premier Tickets and two or three-course meals, you can really make a night of it with Laughterhouse at some of Liverpool’s top comedy venues. All this and much, much more from August’s superb comedy line up hosted at the famous Slaughterhouse on Fenwick Street and The Slug and Lettuce on North John Street, the comedy nights.
