This year Arriva, Stagecoach and Merseyrail will be running late night buses and trains on the two weekends before Christmas, with buses running on selected routes across the region and trains running from Liverpool to Hooton and to Southport. There will also be limited bus services on Christmas Day and limited train services on Boxing Day.
Late night bus services
On Friday 15th and 22nd December and on Saturday 16th and 23rd December, late night/early morning bus services will be operating from Liverpool City Centre to Ellesmere Port, to Chester and to Liverpool Airport via Penny Lane. There will also be services from Chester to Birkenhead and to Liverpool City Centre. Check website for full details.
Christmas Day buses
Free buses will operate between approximately noon and 7pm in the following areas: Queen Square Bus Station to St Helens Bus Station, to Huyton Bus Station and to Speke. Formby to Crossens. Aintree University Hospital to Crosby and to Broadgreen Hospital. New Brighton to Mill Park and to Clatterbridge Hospital. Check website for full details.
Late night train services
On Friday 15th and 22nd December and Saturday 16th and 23rd December, late night/early morning trains will leave from Liverpool Central at 1.30am to Hooton and to Southport, both trains will only call at certain stations. Passengers will only be allowed to board services at Liverpool Central. This is a drop off service only. Check website for full details.
Boxing Day trains
Trains are running between approximately 9am – 8.30pm and only stopping at selected stations. Check website for full details.
Cllr Liam Robinson, chair of The Combined Authority Transport Committee, which oversees the work of Merseytravel, said, “Late night and Boxing Day services are back again this year to give people more choice when it comes to travelling around the city region during the festive season.
“We are also operating free services on Christmas Day for people who would otherwise find it difficult and costly to get around. The services are principally for hospital visiting, but anyone who can make use of them to visit friends and family along the routes is very welcome to do so.”
